How to Make Cannabis-Infused Topicals at Home: A Step-by-Step Guide

Making your own cannabis-infused topicals at home is easier than you might think. These creams, balms, and salves can help with pain relief and skincare, all without getting you high. Plus, you get to control what goes into them, making sure everything is natural and good for your skin.

Using simple ingredients like coconut oil, olive oil, and beeswax, you can create soothing, effective topicals. And if you're looking for high-quality cannabis to get started, well, you know where we are!

What Are Cannabis-Infused Topicals?

Cannabis-infused topicals are lotions, balms, oils, or creams that you apply directly to your skin. They’re packed with cannabinoids but don’t get you high since they don’t enter your bloodstream. Instead, they work right where you apply them, making them great for targeted relief.

How They Work

Topicals interact with receptors in your skin to provide relief without any psychoactive effects

Types of Cannabis-Infused Topicals

  • Balms & Salves – Thicker and great for targeting sore spots.
  • Creams & Lotions – Lighter and good for all-over use.
  • Oils – Easy to apply, especially for massages.

Benefits of Using Cannabis Topicals

People love cannabis-infused topicals because they may help with pain, inflammation, and skincare. Many also include moisturizing ingredients, making them a great addition to your routine.

Why Make Your Own?

When you DIY your topicals, you get complete control over the ingredients, scent, and potency. Whether you're looking for relaxation, relief, or a daily moisturizer, you can customize your product exactly how you want it.

Plus, making your own means you know exactly what’s in it, no weird additives.

Things to Keep in Mind

Before you start, there are two big things to consider: legality and skin sensitivities.

Legal Stuff

Cannabis laws vary, so make sure you check what’s allowed in your area before you start whipping up your topicals.

Skin Sensitivities

Everyone’s skin reacts differently, so always do a small patch test first. If you or someone you’re making topicals for has allergies (coconut, beeswax, essential oils, etc.), be sure to use alternatives.

What You’ll Need

Ingredients:

  • Cannabis – Get good-quality flower or concentrates
  • Carrier Oils – Coconut, olive, or almond oil work great.
  • Beeswax or Shea Butter – Helps create a smooth texture.
  • Essential Oils (optional) – Lavender, eucalyptus, or peppermint add scent and extra skin benefits.

Tools:

  • Double Boiler or Saucepan – For heating without burning.
  • Thermometer – Keeps your oil at the right temp (around 160°F).
  • Strainer or Cheesecloth – To filter out plant material.
  • Glass Jars – For storing your final product.

Picking the Right Cannabis Strain

The strain you choose can change how your topical feels and works.

Cannabinoids:

  • High THC – Good for pain relief and relaxation.
  • High CBD – Best for reducing inflammation and everyday skincare.

Terpenes Matter Too!

  • Linalool (lavender-like) = Relaxing
  • Limonene (citrusy) = Uplifting
  • Caryophyllene (peppery) = Anti-inflammatory

Indica vs. Sativa

  • Indica – Best for deep relaxation and nighttime use.
  • Sativa – Energizing and good for daytime use.
  • Hybrid – A mix of both!

The Decarboxylation Process (Super Important!)

Before using your cannabis in a topical, you need to activate it through decarboxylation. This process converts THCA and CBDA into their active forms (THC and CBD), making your topicals way more effective.

How to Decarb Your Cannabis:

  1. Preheat your oven to 220°F (105°C).
  2. Break up your cannabis and spread it on a baking sheet.
  3. Bake for 30-45 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
  4. Let it cool before using it in your recipe.

Infusing Your Oil

Once your cannabis is decarbed, it’s time to infuse it into your carrier oil.

Oil Infusion Method (Most Common)

  1. Mix decarbed cannabis + carrier oil in a double boiler.
  2. Heat gently for 2-3 hours (keep temp below 200°F).
  3. Strain out plant material using cheesecloth.

Alcohol Infusion (For Tincture-Style Topicals)

  1. Soak decarbed cannabis in high-proof alcohol (like ethanol).
  2. Shake daily for a few weeks.
  3. Strain the liquid and mix it into a gel or lotion base.

Butter Infusion (Less Common)

  1. Melt butter over low heat.
  2. Add decarbed cannabis and heat gently for several hours.
  3. Strain and use in thick, balm-like topicals.

Making Your Topical Base

Now it’s time to mix your infused oil into a smooth, skin-friendly base.

Ingredients:

  • Carrier Oil (already infused)
  • Beeswax or Shea Butter (for texture)
  • Essential Oils (optional, for scent and added benefits)

How to Make It:

  1. Melt beeswax or shea butter in a double boiler.
  2. Add infused oil and stir well.
  3. Mix in essential oils if using.
  4. Pour into glass jars and let cool.

That’s it. Now you have a homemade, cannabis-infused topical that’s completely customizable to your needs.

Storing Your Topicals

Keep your finished product in a cool, dark place to maintain potency and freshness. Properly stored, it should last for several months.

Happy crafting, folks!
